Dynamic visualizations and learning: getting to the difficult questions

چکیده

Recent advances in information technology and graphics have made it possible to produce powerful visualizations of scientific phenomena and more abstract information (Card, Mackinlay, & Schneiderman, 1999; Spence, 2001). With these developments, we can easily present diagrams as static or animated, and we can present images as still photographs or video clips. Furthermore, with developments in hypermedia systems and interactive interfaces, we can create documents that allow students to browse the information in any order, rather than being constrained by the linear ordering of information in printed books. Computer microworlds, in which students can make predictions and evaluate hypotheses by interacting with powerful simulations of scientific phenomena, are becoming more prevalent in educational programs. There has been much excitement about the potential of these new dynamic visualizations for improving education and training. This is perhaps not surprising, because the same claims have been made about every new technology developed in the last century. For example, when the motion picture, radio, and television were invented, each was hailed as the answer to solving educational problems (Cuban, 1986; Mayer, 1999). The following quote from Thomas Edison about the development of the motion picture could just as likely be made by many proponents of dynamic visualization today.

Improving the design and impact of interactive, dynamic visualizations for science learning

This interactive poster session features seven research groups exploring how interactive, dynamic visualizations impact student learning. Six empirical studies report on promising designs for visualizations. These studies use logs of student interactions and embedded assessments to document the quality and trajectory of learning and to capture the cognitive and social processes mediated by the ...

Comparing Experiential Approaches: Structured Language Learning Experiences versus Conversation Partners for Changing Pre-Service Teacher Beliefs

Research has shown that language teachers’ beliefs are often difficult to change through education.  Experiential learning may help, but more research is needed to understand how experiential approaches shape perceptions. This study compares two approaches, conversation partners (CONV) and structured language learning experiences (SLLE), integrated into a course in language acquisition. Partici...

Using drawings to support learning from dynamic visualizations

Dynamic visualizations can enhance science learning by making unseen processes visible. To study how drawing supports learning from visualizations, the drawing group illustrated their ideas after interacting with molecular visualizations and the interaction group had more time to explore the visualizations. The drawing group learned more and made more precise interpretations of the visualizatio...

The Role of Dynamic Visualizations and Spatial Layout of Static Visualizations for Learning How to Classify Locomotion Patterns

In two studies the effectiveness of dynamic and multiple static visualizations was investigated for a highly perceptual learning task, namely locomotion pattern classification. In Study 1a, seventy-five students viewed either dynamic, staticsequential, or static-simultaneous visualizations. For tasks with intermediate difficulty dynamic visualizations led to better recognition of the locomotion...
